About the department
The department was established in the year 2014. The basic objective of this course is to build a foundation and knowledge of microbial science. The course covers the areas like cytology, genetics, biochemistry, and immunology with a major focus on microorganisms. Microbial tools and techniques have been used extensively and hence there is an increasing demand for microbiologists in the field of industry, education and research.
Higher Secondary School Certificate (10+2) or equivalent examination with English and Biology; and two of the science subjects. Or 3 Years Diploma in Pharmacy Course of Board of Technical Education conducted by Government of Maharashtra or its equivalent. Or Higher Secondary School Certificate (10+2) Examination with English and vocational subject of + 2 level (MCVC) – Medical Lab. Technician

B.Sc. course was started in the year 2012. It offers subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Zoology, Botany and Microbiology. For specialization, students can choose either from Mathematics, Chemistry or Microbiology. Students pursuing B.Sc. have employment opportunities in the fields of educational institutions, chemical industry, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, hospitals, healthcare providers, geological survey departments, forensic crime research, research institutions, environment management and conservation.
B.Sc. students have flexibility to explore other fields like management, engineering, law etc. both for higher education and employment opportunities.
Programme Specific Outcome
B.Sc. Microbiology was introduced in the year 2014. As Microbiology is the study of various microorganisms, it encompasses many subjects like bacteriology, mycology, virology, parasitology and agriculture and industrial microbiology. The specializations offered for higher studies are medical microbiology, food microbiology, bioinformatics, clinical research, molecular biology, biochemistry, forensic sciences and hospital management.
Microbiologists can be employed as research associates, analysts, clinical research manager, teachers and in the R & D wing of pharmaceutical companies, quality assurance and quality control. Self-employed microbiologists can set up their own laboratories.
